about

WOODY SHAW QUARTET LIVE IN BREMEN 1983, is a complete previously unissued live performance in Germany by the brilliant trumpeter, digitally remastered from the original master tapes.

Although Woody Shaw’s 1983 European tour presented his Quintet with trombonist Steve Turre, for unknown reasons Turre wasn’t present on January 18, 1983, Bremen show, which thus showcases Shaw in a quartet format all throughout, backed by Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums. Shaw only rarely recorded in a quartet format, making this issue an essential addition to his body of works.

“Woody Shaw possessed the depth of feeling and intellectual grasp to create extraordinary music. But it could not have been fully realized had he not been a dedicated, hardworking technician on his chosen instrument. This amazing concert is a testament to all that is great about Woody Shaw.” - Michael Cuscuna (2018)
